GLP Data and Impact

Since its inception in 2016, Groves Literacy Partnerships has continued to grow, and in the 2023-2024 school year, it is currently serving more than 11,300 students in 577 classrooms across the state of Minnesota.

Students in Groves Literacy Partnership schools are assessed three times a year, in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. These assessments are nationally normed and compare a student’s performance to other students across the country of the same grade level.

Students in Groves Literacy Partnerships are assessed in the following measures:

National norms are often used to classify students into risk categories based on their relative performance compared to their peers. These categories and the national percentile ranges associated with each category vary across screening tools. Partner schools may select from various screening tools which reflect different risk categories. The data presented below uses the following categories to determine each student’s risk level:

 

Groves Literacy Partnerships has consistently assisted students who are testing at high or moderate risk to close the gap to their peers reading at grade level. Students who test below grade level can “close the gap” to their peers reading at grade level by increasing their reading fluency at a rate that is greater than average, which can be measured by an increase in the national percentile.

Students who maintain their national percentile are making average growth at a rate similar to their peers. In the 2022-2023 school year, 2 out of every 3 students who tested as high or moderate risk in the fall increased their national percentile over the course of the year, indicating that they made beyond the expected amount of growth. An additional 17.8% of students maintained their national percentile, indicating that they made the expected amount of growth over the course of the school year.

Groves Literacy Partnerships has the greatest impact with first grade students. In the 2022-2023 school year, nearly half of all high risk first graders were no longer high risk by the end of the year, with 1 in 5 reading closing the gap and reading at grade level in just one year of instruction.

Groves Literacy Partnerships is helping students of all backgrounds become more proficient readers. During the 2022-2023 school year, there was a significant reduction in the percentage of high-risk students across all demographic categories including race, emergent bilinguals, special education students, and students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

 

Groves Literacy Partnerships has a positive impact for students that begin the year at or above grade level. In the 2022-2023 school year, 97.8% students who tested at or above grade level in the fall had a positive rate of improvement, improving their scores on Letter Naming and Letter Word Sounds Fluency (Kindergarten) or Oral Reading Fluency (Grades 1-3).
